Nanaimo’s summer musical tradition is back! Symphony by the Sea happens on Saturday, August 11th at Maffeo Sutton Park at 6pm. This community event is proudly presented by the Vancouver Island Symphony and admission is by donation.
Each year 5,000+ people head to Maffeo Sutton Park with picnic blankets, lawn chairs – (and sometimes umbrellas, as it is a rain or shine event) – to enjoy the glorious music of the Vancouver Island Symphony. “This is our gift of live music to the people of Nanaimo,” says Pierre Simard, Vancouver Island Symphony’s Artistic Director.
This year the Vancouver Island Symphony will feature music from the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle. Everyone in the audience are encouraged to wear their favourite hat or fascinator.
In addition, VIS’s Concertmaster Calvin Dyck will be featured as a soloist in music from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi, and the famous “Hot Canary” complete with his own favourite hat – a yellow fedora complete with an Ostrich feather!
The second half of the concert will feature music from your favourite movie and TV shows: music from “La La Land”, “The Greatest Showman”, “Downton Abbey”, “Les Miserables” and “Pirates of the Caribbean”.
To top it off, thousands of paper lunch bags will be distributed to the audience – and they will be asked to provide the ‘cannon shots’ in the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky. “This is audience participation at its best,” says Calvin Dyck, producer of Symphony by the Sea.
Donations will be collected to help pay for this premiere musical event. For more information on Symphony by the Sea and all the performances the Vancouver Island Symphony are performing next season, please visit www.vancouverislandsymphony.com. Keeping Music Live!
