Beginners are welcome, McDowall teaches Composition, Improvisation, Theory and Jazz, Folk, Blues, Pop/Rock, and Classical guitar. A jazz and music specialist, she conducts jazz, radio, arts marketing and music industry group sessions and workshops by request.
Kerilie McDowall’s recent activities include being invited to judge the Polaris Music Prize this year in 2018. McDowall has judged the JUNO awards for the past three years, and since 2017 has been judging the DownBeat Critics Poll. In past years McDowall released City Wildflower (1995) with her jazz quintet. In 1999 her sextet was recorded and broadcasted by Hot Air at CBC Radio in Vancouver by producer Neil Ritchie. A Spotlight review about Kerilie McDowall and her collective from US Guitar Player magazine raved, “a very talented musician”…” labels listen up,” and “a first-rate jazz quintet.”
McDowall was a bandleader and led her own quartets, quintets, and ensembles and was active in the 90’s as a jazz guitarist and guitar instructor in Vancouver, BC performing at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and other jazz and music festivals, and at venues like The Glass Slipper, Vancouver East Cultural Centre and O’Doul’s. McDowall played clubs/parties/TV and radio.
As a side player, she performed with local Vancouver vocalists and various artists such as Vancouver’s popular all-female jazz group Mother of Pearl and the Katya Gorrie Band playing jazz, blues, R&B and pop. Her educational background includes a York University, Ontario, B.F.A. in Music Performance degree in Jazz Performance and New Music Composition. At York University, McDowall studied with New Music composer James Tenney and studied Classical Guitar. She also studied with renowned Toronto Classical guitar instructor Eli Kassner. After receiving a major Canada Council Composition grant award, she had lessons with acclaimed Toronto and New York City area jazz musicians including New York’s John Abercrombie. As a teenager, McDowall was mentored and influenced by gifted Toronto blues guitarist Buzz Upshaw and she began playing professionally in pop/rock bands while still in high school.

As a writer and critic for the popular US jazz magazine DownBeat, Kerilie recently wrote a Player Profile about Vancouver jazz bassist Jodi Proznick. McDowall’s 2018 DownBeat reviews included Lilian Terry’s recent book, and album reviews of Ernesto Cervini, Tomas Fujiwara, Michael Wollny, Manuel Valera and Peggy Lee.
Formerly Kerilie was a US award-winning volunteer jazz radio host/producer and was on the air for over 18 years in Victoria and Nanaimo, BC, Canada. She has listened to thousands of recordings as a radio producer. In radio, McDowall spent six years as an international jazz/creative/avant-garde music podcaster of Rhythm’a’ning reaching #1 in 2015 on Google under “jazz podcasts.” Kerilie is currently a volunteer TV host on The Show and a volunteer TV director on Coast Connections at Nanaimo’s SHAW TV.
In 2016, McDowall won the Stiletto Woman of Distinction Award from the Black Women & The Arts Awards of Atlanta, Georgia, USA and was the Celebrity of the Month in August 2016 in Nanaimo Magazine. Kerilie has 15 years of guitar teaching experience with all ages and enjoys teaching students. McDowall has 34 years in the industry.
